Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of the median nerve at the wrist, causing hand numbness and tingling; conservative care often helps, and the neck and forearm are examined too because they can produce similar symptoms.
Classic carpal tunnel symptoms include numbness or tingling in the thumb, index and middle fingers, often worse at night. Similar symptoms can come from the neck or from nerve irritation higher in the arm, so we test the whole path.
Care may include soft-tissue treatment of the forearm and wrist, joint work at the wrist, elbow and neck, night splinting advice, nerve gliding exercise and practical changes to how you type, grip and sleep.
Who this care is usually appropriate for
- Night-time hand numbness or tingling
- Symptoms in the thumb, index and middle fingers
- Grip weakness or dropping objects
- Repetitive hand and wrist work
Important considerations & when not to proceed
- Visible muscle wasting at the base of the thumb or constant numbness suggests advanced compression and warrants surgical opinion.
- Diabetes, thyroid disease and pregnancy influence symptoms and management.

Frequently asked questions
Can carpal tunnel be treated without surgery?
Mild and moderate cases frequently respond to conservative care and ergonomic change. Persistent or advanced compression may still need a surgical opinion.
Why is my neck being examined for a hand problem?
Because nerve irritation in the neck can mimic carpal tunnel. Treating the wrong site is the most common reason care fails.

Pain, numbness or tingling in an arm or leg is often referred from the spine or an entrapped nerve, so care begins by locating the source rather than treating the limb alone.

Graston Technique is instrument-assisted soft-tissue treatment: stainless steel instruments are used along muscle, tendon and fascia to find and work through restricted tissue.
