Bulging Disc
A bulging disc is a broad outward extension of a disc's outer wall; it is often painless, and when it does cause symptoms it usually responds to conservative care.
Bulging discs appear on many scans of people with no pain at all, so the finding on its own does not explain a symptom. Our examination determines whether the bulge relates to what you are feeling.
When it does, treatment focuses on reducing load through the disc, restoring segmental movement and improving the strength and habits that determine how much pressure the disc sees each day. Spinal decompression is frequently part of that plan.
Who this care is usually appropriate for
- Localised back or neck pain with a known disc bulge
- Stiffness and pain that worsens with prolonged sitting
- Early disc changes seen on imaging
- Patients who want to prevent progression
Important considerations & when not to proceed
- New or progressive neurological loss changes the plan and may require referral.
- Imaging findings are interpreted alongside your examination, never on their own.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a bulging and a herniated disc?
A bulge involves the outer wall extending broadly outward. A herniation means inner disc material has pushed through that wall. Herniations are more likely to irritate a nerve root.
Should I stop exercising?
Usually not. We help you modify what aggravates the disc while keeping you active, then progress loading as symptoms settle.

Herniated Disc
A herniated disc occurs when the softer inner material of a spinal disc pushes through its outer wall and irritates nearby tissue or a nerve root; many cases improve with structured non-surgical care.
Learn more →Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
Spinal decompression uses a computer-controlled table to apply gentle, cyclic traction to a targeted spinal segment, reducing pressure within the disc so the surrounding tissue has a better environment to settle.

Back pain has many causes, so care starts with an examination that identifies which joints, discs, muscles or movement patterns are involved — then a conservative plan aimed at that cause rather than the symptom alone.
